How much time would judging require?
The orientation will last approximately one hour. The competitive event lasts 1-5 hours, depending on the event. Estimated total time will be between 2-4 hours. If you are interested, we would love to have you judge multiple competitive events. They could be in the same general field or, to see the variety of events HOSA encompasses, you could judge an entirely different style of event later in the day. There are a couple of events that may last all day.
Why am I qualified to judge?
All judge information and answers to the competition questions are provided to the judges before the competition, as well as, scoring guidelines. Due to the variety of events, adult professionals with a variety of skills and experiences are needed to serve as event judges. Am I reimbursed for expenses? Not applicable to the 2021 Virtual SLC
No. However, WA HOSA will provide your meals, parking and admission to the opening and closing ceremonies. If you would like to attend the opening ceremonies, you will need to check in at the registration counter on Thursday. A continental breakfast will be provided during the Judges’ Orientation and Training Friday morning, as well as lunch in the afternoon. Also, you will have the opportunity to meet with students and professionals from across the state. Your participation can help encourage these students to pursue a career in health career.
Exactly where is it located?
This year the WA HOSA State Leadership Conference will be held virtually. Live events will be conducted over Zoom.
(We provide precise directions with local telephone contacts in our judge information packets. You will receive confirmation via e-mail from WA HOSA when you agree to serve as a judge. You will also be provided with a copy of the event guidelines and judge instructions.) Not applicable to the 2021 Virtual SLC

Judges are needed for the following events:
Professionals are needed to evaluate skills in the nine career fields listed below. (Students have taken a 50 item test before arriving onsite, with the top scores competitors advancing to the skills portion. The competitors perform 2-3 skills after being given a mock scenario. Judges evaluate using the provided rubric that details each step the student is expected to perform. Not Applicable to the 2021 Virtual SLC)

Other events include (descriptions below may not reflect the 2021 virtual platform modifications to guidelines):
Medical Spelling--Health care professionals are needed to pronounce complex medical terms and judge the competitors on their accuracy in spelling those terms.
Clinical Specialty--Health professionals are needed to judge this event where competitors select the health career of their choice – then develop career-related skills, knowledge and work-based experience.
Personal Care--Nursing professionals are needed to evaluate skills such as hand washing, changing a patient’s gown, TPR, make a closed bed, transfer a patient, etc. This is a special needs event: Students compete only against other special needs students.
Biomedical Debate--Health professionals are needed to judge a debate round.
Community Awareness--Judges evaluate a project carried out by a HOSA chapter to inform their community about a health issue.
Creative Problem Solving--Competitors are given a real or hypothetical health problem, and must apply the problem solving process to propose a solution to a panel of judges.
Forensic Medicine--Teams will be given a case study and asked to identify the time of death, immediate cause of death, manner of death and record their remarks (pertinent observations) about the case that explains why they came to the conclusions they reached. Judges are needed to evaluate the student case study answers and conclusions, based on the provided scoring key.
Health Education--Health Educators or other health professionals judge students delivering a health-related lesson, and they interview the students to evaluate the planning, delivery and evaluation of the lesson.
HOSA Bowl--Health professionals are needed to judge team answers to medical terminology and related questions in this "College Quiz Bowl" format.
Medical Innovations--Judges will evaluate student displays about a new development in the medical field.
Parliamentary Procedure--Judges are needed to evaluate teams of 5-8 members as they demonstrate what they have learned about parliamentary procedure while they conduct a business meeting, addressing the motions in a secret problem.
Public Service Announcement--Judges will evaluate a PSA in regard to health and well-being.
Health Career Display--Health care professionals judge a display and oral presentation related to a health career from a pair of competitors.
Extemporaneous Health Poster--Judges with art, graphic arts, marketing or similar skills evaluate artistic posters that interpret a health-related topic.
Extemporaneous Writing--Health care and English language experts are needed to judge the written essays in this event.
Health Career Photography--Judges rate three photographs that competitors have taken which illustrate three different careers in health professions.
Healthy Lifestyle--Judges will evaluate portfolios showcasing student projects striving for a healthier lifestyle.
Interviewing Skills--Judges rate students who participate in a mock job interview for a healthcare position. This is a special needs event. Students in this event compete only against other special needs students.
Job Seeking Skills--Judges rate students who participate in a mock job interview for a health care position.
Prepared Speaking--Judges evaluate public speaking skills.
Researched Persuasive Writing & Speaking--Judges evaluate a written research paper or a persuasive speech as part of this event.
Speaking Skills--Judges evaluate public speaking skills. This is a special needs event. Students in this event compete only against other special needs students.
CERT Skills--Professionals are needed to evaluate skills such as lifts and carries, triage, splinting fractures, head-to-toe assessment, etc.
CPR/First Aid--Professionals are needed to evaluate CPR/First Aid skills.
Life Support Skills--Professionals are needed to evaluate CPR/First Aid skills. This is a special needs event: Students compete only against other special needs students.
MRC Partnership--This event encourages HOSA members and chapters to develop a partnership with the Medical Reserve Corps. Judges are needed to evaluate portfolio and presentations as competitors present their involvement.
Public Health--Judges are needed to evaluate presentations developed by teams to educate the public on this year’s topic.
HOSA Happenings--Judges are needed to evaluate the multimedia chapter communication.
